Kenya bans single-use plastics in protected areas

Kenya has banned the use of single-use plastic as the world is celebrating the international environment day. The decision to ban single-use plastic in Kenya was taken in 2017, but the directive was legislated on June 5, 2019, by the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, through Gazette that stated the ban to take effect from June 4, 2020. The latest development comes three years after Kenya implemented one of the strictest bans on plastic bags in the world. Kenya had banned the use of plastic bags in the country in 2017 and since then it has attained over 80% success in enforcement. Kenya's Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government and Ministry of Devolution and the ASALS in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife were identified to implement the ban. Burundi's first lady has reportedly been airlifted to Kenya after contracting COVID-19, Kenyan media report. Citizen TV reports that Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza arrived in Nairobi on Thursday and was immediately admitted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, one of the COVID-19 treatment facilities in the country. The 50-year-old was accompanied by three bodyguards, one of whom also tested positive. Burundi's presidency is yet to issue any statement on the first lady's condition. The East African nation of about 11 million people has reported 42 cases of COVID-19 and one death. Unlike many countries globally, Burundi did not impose any movement restrictions in the country in efforts to curb the spread of the disease. The country last week held its general elections in search for a new president to replace Pierre Nkurunziza. The ruling party's Evariste Ndayishimiye was declared the winner of Burundi's presidential election with 69% of the vote. The 52-...

The choice of Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa by a section of Western political leaders as the region’s representatives has rattled Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi and his allies. On Wednesday, seven MPs allied to the ANC leader registered their opposition over the move by their 27 colleagues saying it had sidelined their man. The MPs, who included Mr Alfred Agoi (Sabatia), Mr Omboko Milemba (Emuhaya) and Ms Beatrice Adagala (Vihiga County) said they were not part of the meeting that endorsed Mr Wamalwa and Mr Oparanya, and were not involved in its planning. Others were Mr Christopher Aseka (Khwisero), Mr John Bunyasi (Nambale), Mr Titus Khamala (Luhrambi) and Mr Ernest Kivai (Vihiga). In a statement released by Mr Mudavadi’s Press Secretary Kibisu Kabatesi, the seven MPs said they only learnt of the development through the media. Mr Mudavadi’s allies said the agenda of the meeting by their 27 colle...

QuantLase Imaging Lab, the medical-research arm of the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange-listed International Holdings Company, IHC, announced that it has developed novel equipment which enables for much faster mass screenings, with test results available in seconds and allowing testing on a wider scale. The technology will reinforce the UAE’s position as a hub of research and innovation, as scientists around the world scramble to devise a faster method of testing for patients suspected to have been infected with the coronavirus and potentially identifying carriers before they become infectious. This break-through will enable ‘Mass-scale screening’, changing the whole dimension of tracing and the speed with which workforces can be approached. Abdul Rahman bin Mohammad bin Nasser Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, expressed hope over the discovery saying: "We are always following innovations related to the early and rapid detection of COVID–19. How the UAE Has Been Leading in Digital Transformation

Image
The United Arab Emirates was forward thinking years ago by prioritising digital transformation. That is part of its wider national economic development and diversification transformation.  Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are undergoing economic diversification transformations. A huge component of that is digital transformation across many aspects of daily life. This was even before Co-VID 19 and social distancing suddenly became the norm globally. UAE-wide the country, for instance, has its economic strategies of UAE Vision 2021 and UAE Centennial. Both strategies have strong themes around digitalisation and transformation. The former focuses on transitioning the UAE into one that is based on knowledge. This would promote innovation, investing in research and development (R&D) and embracing ground-breaking  technologies . Within each of the UAE’s seven Emirates there are visible implementations of those as well. In Dubai,...
