Kenya becomes first country to receive Safer Tourism Resilience Seal award

  Kenya has become the first country globally to receive Safer Tourism Resilience Seal recommended by Rebuilding Travel. Tourism CS Najib Balala presented the award virtually, in an event that was attended by global tourism leaders under the Rebuilding Travel umbrella. Rebuilding Travel umbrella is a global pro-tourism industry group, comprising of tourism boards, ministers of tourism, professional associations, industry stakeholders, researchers, academics as well as travelers.   Balala said during the event that the award is a testimony to Kenya’s continued efforts to ensure travellers' safety amid coronavirus pandemic. “As a destination, we have put together health and safety measures that are aimed at ensuring the safe reopening of the tourism sector. This is to ensure that our citizens, travelers, and workers are well protected,” Balala said. He also said that the recognition follows the Safe Travel Stamp award to Kenya by the World Travel and Tourism Council earlier in June.

  A new formula A new formula for sharing revenue among counties could be in place by next week after a Senate committee formed to broker a deal on the contentious formula announced a breakthrough. The 12-member team made the announcement on Wednesday after eight days of intense negotiations on the third basis for sharing the national cake among the 47 devolved units.  The panel however declined to disclose the contents of the final formula they have agreed citing standing orders that bars it from making the disclosure. “We will not and we are not allowed by standing orders of the house to divulge the contents of the report until it is presented to the speaker and it finds its way to the house,” committee co-chair Moses Wetang'ula (Bungoma) said. 'Remarkable' 442-carat diamond found in Africa, could be worth $18M

One of the world's largest diamonds has been unearthed in Africa -- a 442-carat rock worth as much as $18 million, according to one expert. Gem Diamonds Ltd. discovered the gem at its Letseng mine in Lesotho, the company announced Friday. “The recovery of this remarkable 442 carat diamond, one of the world’s largest gem-quality diamonds to be recovered this year, is further confirmation of the caliber of the Letseng mine and its ability to consistently produce large, high-quality diamonds," Gem Diamonds CEO Clifford Elphick said in a  statement . According to  Bloomberg , which first reported the news, the precious stone could be worth as much as $18 million, citing a research note from BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Sterck. "A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this diamond will be used to fund a special community project, as agreed with our partner, the government of Lesotho," Elphick said..   The Co-operative Bank of Kenya has joined the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the fight against Illegal Wildlife Trafficking. This, after the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) listed lender signed the United for Wildlife 2018 Mansion House Declaration. The bank has now joined the United for Wildlife’s (UfW) Financial Taskforce committing to fight the illegal trafficking in wildlife, by way of building illegal wildlife trade into existing financial crime compliance programs. In addition, Co-op Bank also commits to also work with other financial institutions to share good practices and support one another in fighting illegal trade in wildlife. Eggs Successfully Harvested From The Last Remaining Northern White Rhinos

In a bid to save the species, scientists from the  Ol Pejeta Conservancy  in Kenya have successfully harvested 10 eggs from the last two remaining northern white rhinos. Named Fatu and Najin, both females are unable to bear offspring. The 10 eggs (8 from Fatu and 2 from Najin) will be fertilized with sperm previously taken from a bull rhino and embryos will be implanted into a southern white rhino, whose pregnancy lasts 16 to 18 months.    Northern white rhinos are critically endangered, according to the   International Union for Conservation of Nature   (IUCN). Desired for their horns for various traditional medicine, these animals have experienced a rapid decline over the past 50 years.   Bahrain Bahrain praised the normalisation of ties between Israel and the UAE and welcomed the move, according to the Bahrain News Agency.  Commenting on the deal, a Bahraini spokesperson said: "The kingdom welcomes the diplomatic efforts made by the United Arab Emirates.
