Kenya wins UN Security Council seat


Kenya has been elected to the UN Security Council after defeating Djibouti in a run-off vote.

Kenya takes the seat designated for African countries.

The East African country polled 129 votes against Djibouti’s 62 in the second round to win the seat.

Kenya will replace South Africa in the non-permanent seat.

Niger and Tunisia are currently the other representatives of the African continent on the council.

All non-permanent members serve for two years.

Responding to Kenya’s win of the seat, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the win was a "demonstration of the country's growing profile and influence in the community of nations as a steadfast and dependable development partner".

He congratulated Djibouti for being a "worthwhile opponent" and thanked the African Union for its endorsement.

The UN organ that maintains international peace and security is made up of 15 countries.

Five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.

The permanent members, who have the right to resolutions are China, France, Rusia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Ten non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms, with five elected each year.

Joining the Council in January are Kenya, India, Ireland, Mexico, and Norway. They will replace Belgium, Dominican Republic, Germany, Indonesia, and South Africa.

Meanwhile, Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent, and the Grenadines, Tunisia, and Vietnam will be members of the council till the end of 2021.

State releases Sh8.7bn for needy families

The government has released Sh8.7 billion under the cash transfer programmes to cushion vulnerable people against the effects of coronavirus as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta. Social Protection Principal Secretary Nelson Marwa said on Sunday that a further Sh500 million has also been released to clear arrears owed to persons living with disabilities. Mr Marwa said the money has already been wired to respective banks, and each beneficiary will receive Sh8,000, which is the cumulative payment between January and April. The paying banks contracted by the beneficiaries include Kenya Commercial Bank, Equity Bank, Post Bank and Cooperative Bank. “This money is meant to cushion these vulnerable groups from the negative effects of Covid-19 as emphasised by President Uhuru Kenyatta,” Mr Marwa said. My determination for this coming election, is that we must bring this country together whatever the price and cost, DP William Ruto has said. These were the words of Ruto from a clip aired in  2012. The deputy president shared the clip on Sunday saying that "This was in 2012, 9 yrs ago. Am as persuaded now as was then."   In the clip, Ruto said he is convinced that Kenya must be united. "... those who do not believe that Kenya will be one are in for a shock. I have a lot of energy and I intend to dispense it to get it done," he said.  "We are determined that you will not vote for a person because of the village he is coming from, spelling of his name but what he can do for a nation."
