GPS Tracking Device Put on Last Known White Giraffe in Effort to Protect It From Poachers

 


The last known white giraffe in the world is believed to be in Kenya and has been given a tracking device by officials to help protect it from poachers.


The GPS tracking device was attached to one of the animal’s horns and will send a signal every hour to alert wildlife rangers to its location so they can keep a close eye on it.


The white male giraffe is now the last of its kind after a female and her calf were killed by poachers in March, the Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy said in a statement Tuesday.


The white giraffe has a rare genetic trait called leucism, which causes the albino-like color. As a result, it sticks out in arid Kenya, making it vulnerable to poachers.

State releases Sh8.7bn for needy families

The government has released Sh8.7 billion under the cash transfer programmes to cushion vulnerable people against the effects of coronavirus as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta. Social Protection Principal Secretary Nelson Marwa said on Sunday that a further Sh500 million has also been released to clear arrears owed to persons living with disabilities. Mr Marwa said the money has already been wired to respective banks, and each beneficiary will receive Sh8,000, which is the cumulative payment between January and April. The paying banks contracted by the beneficiaries include Kenya Commercial Bank, Equity Bank, Post Bank and Cooperative Bank. “This money is meant to cushion these vulnerable groups from the negative effects of Covid-19 as emphasised by President Uhuru Kenyatta,” Mr Marwa said. Kenya’s largest dairy producer wants to buy solar

New Kenya Cooperative Creameries finalized the preliminary phase of a tender this week to purchase electricity from a solar facility that will be built at its new KCC Sotik Factory. Kenya’s largest dairy producer will buy power from a project featuring both ground-mounted and rooftop PV arrays. The selected developer will finance, own and operate the plant and will sell all of its output to New Kenya Cooperative Creameries under a power purchase agreement. “The financial proposal will be quoted in payments per kWh as well as any other cost,” the company said.  “Average consumption from the grid was 1,428,016 kWh in 2017 and 945,206 kWh in 2018.” The company currently covers around 69% of its energy needs with electricity from utility Kenya Power and Lighting Co.
