UAE Mars Mission live updates: Spacecraft 'is in good health'


The UAE's leaders on Monday said the Mars probe blast-off was a historic achievement that the country could be proud of.

The Arab world's first homegrown space mission launched right on time, sending the Hope probe soaring towards Earth's outer orbit.

"We watched the successful launch of the Hope probe to Mars with pride and joy, as we embark on a new chapter in space, led by our exceptional youth," Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, said on Monday.

"Congratulations to the UAE for this historic achievement."

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, said the probe was on its way to the Red Planet as planned.

"We have started the 493-million km journey to the Red Planet. May God facilitate our journey," he said.

In the next 200 days, Hope will travel at speeds of up to 120,000kph on its incredible 495-million-kilometre journey to Mars.

State releases Sh8.7bn for needy families

The government has released Sh8.7 billion under the cash transfer programmes to cushion vulnerable people against the effects of coronavirus as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta. Social Protection Principal Secretary Nelson Marwa said on Sunday that a further Sh500 million has also been released to clear arrears owed to persons living with disabilities. Mr Marwa said the money has already been wired to respective banks, and each beneficiary will receive Sh8,000, which is the cumulative payment between January and April. The paying banks contracted by the beneficiaries include Kenya Commercial Bank, Equity Bank, Post Bank and Cooperative Bank. “This money is meant to cushion these vulnerable groups from the negative effects of Covid-19 as emphasised by President Uhuru Kenyatta,” Mr Marwa said. The deputy president shared the clip on Sunday saying that "This was in 2012, 9 yrs ago. Am as persuaded now as was then."   In the clip, Ruto said he is convinced that Kenya must be united. "... those who do not believe that Kenya will be one are in for a shock.
