Burundi's first lady has reportedly been airlifted to Kenya after contracting COVID-19, Kenyan media report. Citizen TV reports that Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza arrived in Nairobi on Thursday and was immediately admitted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, one of the COVID-19 treatment facilities in the country. The 50-year-old was accompanied by three bodyguards, one of whom also tested positive. Burundi's presidency is yet to issue any statement on the first lady's condition. The East African nation of about 11 million people has reported 42 cases of COVID-19 and one death. Unlike many countries globally, Burundi did not impose any movement restrictions in the country in efforts to curb the spread of the disease. The country last week held its general elections in search for a new president to replace Pierre Nkurunziza. The ruling party's Evariste Ndayishimiye was declared the winner of Burundi's presidential election with 69% of the vote. The 52-

The choice of Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa by a section of Western political leaders as the region’s representatives has rattled Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi and his allies. On Wednesday, seven MPs allied to the ANC leader registered their opposition over the move by their 27 colleagues saying it had sidelined their man. The MPs, who included Mr Alfred Agoi (Sabatia), Mr Omboko Milemba (Emuhaya) and Ms Beatrice Adagala (Vihiga County) said they were not part of the meeting that endorsed Mr Wamalwa and Mr Oparanya, and were not involved in its planning. Others were Mr Christopher Aseka (Khwisero), Mr John Bunyasi (Nambale), Mr Titus Khamala (Luhrambi) and Mr Ernest Kivai (Vihiga). In a statement released by Mr Mudavadi’s Press Secretary Kibisu Kabatesi, the seven MPs said they only learnt of the development through the media. How the UAE Has Been Leading in Digital Transformation

Image
The United Arab Emirates was forward thinking years ago by prioritising digital transformation. That is part of its wider national economic development and diversification transformation.  Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are undergoing economic diversification transformations. A huge component of that is digital transformation across many aspects of daily life. This was even before Co-VID 19 and social distancing suddenly became the norm globally. UAE-wide the country, for instance, has its economic strategies of UAE Vision 2021 and UAE Centennial. Both strategies have strong themes around digitalisation and transformation. The former focuses on transitioning the UAE into one that is based on knowledge. This would promote innovation, investing in research and development (R&D) and embracing ground-breaking  technologies . Within each of the UAE’s seven Emirates there are visible implementations of those as well. In Dubai, they hav

Kenya and Uganda hit by power blackout, electricity back in most of Kenya

Kenya and Uganda were hit by power blackouts on Saturday, and Kenya Power said the outage on its grid was caused by a fault on a high voltage line but that it had restored supply to most parts of the country. REUTERS/Thomas Mukoya/File Photo The neighbouring East African countries’ grids are interconnected. In January 2018, both suffered major blackouts due to what they said were system disturbances. NAIROBI, Kenya Ethiopia has admitted that they shot down on Monday a Kenyan plane carrying humanitarian and medical supplies, killing all six people onboard. In a statement to the African Union, the Ethiopian military said they interpreted the plane’s “unusual flight” as a “potential suicide mission,” adding the crew did not inform authorities of any aircraft flying to the country. "Because of lack of communication and awareness, the aircraft was shot down," the military said. "The incident was performed by non-Amisom troops of Ethiopia, which will require mutual collaborative investigation team from Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya to further understand the truth," it added. All six passengers onboard died on Monday after the plane was shot down in the southwestern town of Bardaale in Somalia. Kenya expressed its shock over the incident, saying the plane was on a humanitarian mission amid the coronavirus pandemic. Source: aa
